STORY

DATE Masamune, the feudal ruler of the Warring States period (1467-1603) is widely known for his political and military achievements, but he was also an intellectual who led efforts to establish the city of Sendai as a cultural center.
Masamune, with his competitive spirit towards Kyoto, aimed to revitalize the ancient culture rooted in Tohoku.
His unique and sophisticated taste helped establish “DATE Culture,” which was based on local tradition but which also incorporated the luxury and brilliance of Kyoto’s Momoyama Culture, as well as influences from abroad.
As a result, a never-before-seen Sendai culture blossomed through his efforts, and was passed on to later generations, including those in other parts of Japan.
As the culture matured, its influence extended from the samurai class to ordinary people.
