STORY

The Kanmon Strait has been an important point for land and ocean transportation from ancient times.
Since the opening of Shimonoseki and Moji ports as a result of the Shimonoseki War at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1860’s, twin lighthouses have been constructed at the entrance of the strait and many grand modern buildings have also been built along the coast.
Gazing out to sea, as foreign vessels pass through the narrow strait, the backdrop of these magnificent buildings gives the impression of a previous era where time stands still.
Visitors can travel by boat or tunnel to both sides of the strait and witness these evocative locations and scenes, feeling as if they have slipped into a scene from a historic movie set.
