STORY

It all started with plans to rebuild Zuizsenji Temple: the magnificent Inami sculptures made from the single chisel of a temple carpenter, the sculptors who wielded these chisels were behind the founding of the town of Inami. Stone-paved streets are lined with sculptor’s workshops and machiya townhouses. The sound of wooden hammers and the scent of freshly cut lumber are everywhere. If you look around, you’ll find sculptures of the seven gods of happiness and the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. It’s as though the entire town is an art museum. During the spring festival, portable shrines with elaborate Inami woodwork wind through streets along with the Lion Dance performers as the townsfolk pray for peace, security and a bountiful harvest. The skill and art of Inami artisans are known throughout the country and they are considered the guardians of sculpture and woodwork in Japan.
